Valve may be developing a mid-generation refresh of the Steam Frame headset featuring OLED optics. References to a device codenamed Plano were discovered within the Steam Frame kernel source code by SteamFrameHub.
The proposed Plano model would retain most specifications of the original hardware but upgrade to OLED panels. These displays would offer a per-eye resolution of 3,552x3,840, a significant increase over the 2,160x2,160 pancake lenses currently utilized.
SteamFrameHub suggests these optics align with those in the Samsung Galaxy XR, which retails for approximately $1,799. Due to the ongoing RAM crisis, a potential OLED Steam Frame would likely exceed that price point, though the current hardware remains sold out despite these supply constraints.
Valve is currently managing reservation lists for existing hardware, suggesting any OLED variant remains a distant prospect. It is unclear if such a device would arrive before future developments like a potential Steam Deck 2.
