Sony has officially unveiled a Midnight Black variant of its Japan-exclusive PS5 Digital Edition. This console, identified as model CFI-2200B02S, is scheduled for release on November 19, coinciding with the launch of GTA 6.
The console features an 825 GB SSD and will retail for ¥55,000, which is approximately $350. Additionally, a matching Midnight Black disc drive will be available on the same date for ¥11,980, or roughly $76. Pre-orders for the hardware begin on October 20 at authorized Japanese retailers.
Prospective buyers should note significant regional restrictions. The system language is permanently locked to Japanese, and the hardware is exclusively compatible with PlayStation accounts registered within Japan. These limitations appear designed to prevent the exportation of the units, which remain significantly cheaper than the standard Digital Edition models sold elsewhere.
Sony also reiterated that all new PlayStation titles will transition to digital-only formats starting in January 2028. There is currently no information regarding a potential release outside of Japan, and the company's pricing strategy suggests this model will remain a regional exclusive.
