Maboroshi Artworks has announced that its upcoming psychological horror adventure, SOMBRAS: negative frames, is scheduled for release on December 4. The title will be available on PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch. The game follows Shiomi, a photography student who moves to a rural Japanese town, only to find the area consumed by a distorted, mirror-like dimension filled with Hungry Shadows.
The core gameplay revolves around a camera system where players capture supernatural phenomena and hidden clues. A distinct feature involves developing film in a darkroom using chemicals, which serves as both a puzzle and exploration mechanic. These developed photos provide inspiration for camera upgrades and help players unlock previously inaccessible areas.
Recent demonstrations showcased enhanced visual effects, specifically dense fog and lighting that emphasize the atmosphere of a 2000s-era Japanese residential area. The horror experience focuses on building tension through sound and photography rather than jump scares. Additionally, the game features intentionally peculiar Japanese text on signs and vending machines, which the creative director, Juan Fandiño Martín, incorporated into the environment.
Developed by an Osaka-based team of approximately 20 people, the project has seen improvements in darkroom controls and new exploration areas compared to earlier versions. A playable demo is currently available on Steam for those interested in experiencing the updated visuals ahead of the official launch.
