Global PC shipments experienced a sharp decline of 20% during the third quarter of this year. This downturn has sparked significant concern among technology industry participants despite ongoing promotional efforts surrounding the era of AI-integrated personal computers.
According to WindowsLatest, the slump is primarily driven by surging prices for essential components like RAM and storage. The massive global expansion of data centers dedicated to training artificial intelligence models has depleted hardware memory supplies, subsequently increasing production costs and consumer retail prices.
Furthermore, the integration of local AI processing features, such as Microsoft Copilot within Windows 11, has failed to incentivize users to upgrade their hardware. Both individual consumers and corporate entities are delaying new purchases due to high costs and current economic conditions.
The requirement for substantial RAM capacity to support optimal local AI processing further inflates unit prices, making these devices less affordable. Industry analysts predict this sluggish market performance will persist for several upcoming quarters, forcing manufacturers to reconsider their pricing strategies.
