NTangible, a sports-tech startup, has introduced a psychological assessment designed to quantify an athlete's ability to perform in high-pressure situations. Co-founder Dan Connerty and psychologist Dr. Ed Levine developed the Clutch Factor assessment to measure mental performance, an area previously considered difficult to quantify.
The assessment functions similarly to the Thematic Apperception Test, requiring participants to describe ambiguous scenes. Responses are analyzed using a neurolinguistic scoring guide to produce a score between 0 and 1000. Connerty claims that athletes scoring above 750 are twice as likely to commit to Division I programs.
A potential limitation identified by TechCrunch is the susceptibility to dishonest responses. In a test, the author achieved a score of 584 when answering honestly, but increased that result to 802 by simulating the responses of a top recruit. Connerty suggests the platform could help coaches identify areas for mental training.
Currently supporting nine sports, NTangible aims to expand into corporate environments to assist HR departments. The company is presenting its business model at TechCrunch Disrupt, which takes place from October 13 to 15 in San Francisco, where it is competing in the Startup Battlefield.
