A study published on December 19, 2025, in the journal Eludamos by researchers Rowan Daneels and Kato Maes from the University of Antwerp investigates why players seek deep meaning in video games. By surveying 277 participants, the researchers explored the concept of eudaimonic emotions, which transcend simple hedonic pleasure.
Eudaimonic experiences involve introspection, existential questioning, and a sense of connection, rather than just immediate amusement. These emotions can include melancholy or nostalgia, providing a profound sense of fulfillment. The study highlights that players often engage with cozy games to satisfy needs for social connection and personal meaning rather than mere escapism.
The researchers note that individual sensitivity and expectations dictate the effectiveness of these experiences. While games like Stardew Valley and Animal Crossing: New Horizons are cited for fostering accomplishment and belonging, the study clarifies that these titles do not systematically trigger eudaimonic responses in every player.
Furthermore, games like Gris demonstrate that even themes of grief can facilitate emotional regulation and physiological relaxation. The authors emphasize that their findings rely on participant declarations and do not prove that games fundamentally alter personality traits or guarantee specific emotional outcomes for all users.
