Control Resonant launched last week as an available title for PlayStation 5. In an interview, Remedy's lead level designer Anne-Marie Grönroos, art director Elmeri Raitanen, and lead gameplay designer Sergey Mohov discussed the artistic creation behind protagonist Dylan, the design of Strange York and The Gap, and the utilization of PS5 performance and the DualSense controller.
The game's developers aimed to ground the superhero fantasy by showing the physical toll and clumsiness behind Dylan's movements. Animations highlight that using abilities like Elevate requires actual effort and that gravity shifting causes confusion, fostering empathy while reinforcing themes of power coupled with a desire for interpersonal closeness.
Remedy contrasted the confined brutalist design of the original Control with the expansiveness of Manhattan in Resonant, creating an iconic, retro, film-like version called Strange York. Meanwhile, The Gap offers a stark, gray, and otherworldly representation of Dylan's psyche inspired by concrete surroundings and films like The Truman Show.
The PS5 version leverages hardware capabilities to deliver larger view distances, more physics objects, and more enemies on screen, making it Remedy's largest game to date. Furthermore, Control Resonant makes extensive use of the DualSense controller by routing radio transmissions through the built-in speaker and providing feedback and resistance via adaptive triggers.
