Project Aces is shifting its narrative approach in Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve to deliver a more intimate and emotional story set within the world of Strangereal. The plot centers on the Central Federation of Usea (FCU) navy attempting to repel sotoan invaders, following a laconic fighter pilot found adrift on a life raft after a battle by the carrier Endurance.
Players are initially assigned as the navigator to fighter pilot Jan Rex Cope, known as the propaganda hero Wings of Theve, whose orders are to flee combat. When Cope dies in the line of duty after they are shot down, the player inherits his moniker and secretly replaces him to support the war effort.
Ace Combat 8 introduces first-person cinematic sequences that place players directly in rooms or on deck with other characters, utilizing the DualSense controller's haptic feedback. Players can respond to questions using directional buttons, look around with the right joystick, and make choices during key moments to shape their character's personality and influence their Joker Flight squadmates.
The game's narrative heavily emphasizes squad interaction through briefings, between-mission cutscenes, and in-flight radio chatter. Players can issue directional button commands to Joker Flight, such as ordering them to attack, return to formation, or provide cover.
Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve is scheduled to release on PlayStation 5 on October 2.
