While Sony faces criticism for its plan to cease physical game publishing by 2028, Nintendo has confirmed it does not intend to follow that path. The company remains committed to offering both physical and digital formats to its customers.
Bill van Zyll, Nintendo's vice president and general manager for Latin America, stated during the 2026 Brasil Game Show that the company prioritizes consumer preferences. He noted that Nintendo does not favor one format over the other, acknowledging how much fans enjoy physical media.
In Latin America, consumer preference leans heavily toward physical copies over eShop purchases. Van Zyll explained that abandoning physical media in this region would be counterproductive, as this trend is prevalent across all Latin American countries and other global markets.
Van Zyll highlighted that digital games offer unique benefits, such as the ability to share titles with friends. While he acknowledged that Nintendo's strategy could theoretically change in the future, maintaining physical distribution is currently central to their plans.
