Japanese production company Toei is partnering with the Thai-based 13 Studio to develop a new live-action film adaptation of Junji Ito's horror manga, The Hanging Balloons.
The original story depicts a surreal nightmare where giant balloons resembling human heads appear in the sky, using attached ropes to hunt their specific targets. This narrative was previously adapted into a film in 2000 and featured as an animation in the 2023 Netflix series Junji Ito Maniac: Japanese Tales of the Macabre.
This upcoming collaboration will relocate the setting to Thailand. While the production aims to respect the core world-building of the source material, it will incorporate a fresh interpretation of the narrative.
Taweewat Wantha, the director behind the 2024 Thai box office hit Death Whisperer 2, has been selected to helm the project.
