Valve's September 2026 Steam Hardware & Software Survey reveals that 32 GB of system RAM has become the most popular memory capacity among participants. The 32 GB configuration climbed 4.77 points to hit 42.22%, whereas the previous leader, 16 GB, dropped 3.38 points down to 37.82%. This represents a major single-month shift, as 16 GB previously led with 41.20% compared to 37.45%.

Steam's survey data only tracks capacity, meaning specifics regarding speed, DDR4, or DDR5 formats are not recorded. This shift aligns with recent game releases frequently listing 32 GB RAM in their recommended system specifications while relegating 16 GB to minimum requirements.

Additional metrics from the September 2026 survey show AMD capturing 47.41% CPU share on Windows after gaining 1.89 points, while the GeForce RTX 5070 rose 2.30 points to become the most common GPU at 5.86%. Furthermore, Windows 11 grew to 71.34%, and primary displays at 1440p increased by 5.18 points to reach 27.04%.

Because the survey is voluntary and experienced a significant sample shift—such as Simplified Chinese increasing by 7.42 points to reach 31.39% of surveyed systems—observers note that October's figures will be necessary to confirm if 32 GB maintains its top position.
