Fuse Games utilized a rudimentary board game prototype to develop the progression system for their arcade racing title, Star Wars Galactic Racer. Creative director Kieran Crimmins and CEO Matt Webster explained that this method allowed the team to validate the game's core mechanics and emotional experience rapidly, bypassing the time-consuming process of in-software development.

The board game prototype, constructed using Post-it notes, scribbles, and dice, specifically focused on testing the game's roguelite progression loop. This system rewards players with tuning points to improve random stats and parts that grant unique abilities or status effects. Players can also spend earned credits on upgrades or new abilities after completing several races.

The final implementation features a roguelite structure where new unlocks enter a pool for future runs, while tuning points provide permanent upgrades that persist between sessions. This design choice is unconventional for the racing genre, necessitating early testing to ensure the mechanics were engaging.

Early reception for the title has been positive, with reviewers describing the singleplayer mode as a clever roguelike gauntlet. Additionally, the multiplayer tour mode is noted for its successful blend of chaotic arcade racing and MOBA-style elements, which critics have labeled as brilliant.
