Odu Studios, a team originating from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, is developing the action RPG Odu: Ancestral Nexus. Project Manager Bruno Camenietzki Amorim describes the title as a debut commercial project centered on Afro-Brazilian culture and the Yoruba-derived Orisha deities. The game is slated for release on PC via Steam and Xbox, with Japanese language support confirmed.
The game integrates a unique divination mechanic inspired by traditional Yoruba practices. Players cast shells on a virtual table, which randomly strengthens or weakens specific gameplay elements, creating a roguelike experience where rules shift with each session. This system is tied to the collection of Itan, short narratives detailing the history and teachings of the Orisha.
Combat mechanics feature top-down exploration and Metroidvania-style environmental progression. Players can utilize specific Orisha powers, such as transforming into a buffalo or summoning swarms, to overcome obstacles. While the alpha build demonstrated promising mechanics, the developer noted the presence of minor bugs, such as enemies spawning in unintended locations, which did not halt progress.
Development is supported by public funding and the team's dedication, with no external publisher attached. The studio is also exploring innovative accessibility, including a prototype that allows players to control the game using a 20kg Tambor drum. Although a release date remains unannounced, the team is actively pursuing expansion to Nintendo platforms.
