Ludeon Studios has released version 1.7 for the science fiction colony simulator RimWorld. Approaching its eighth anniversary since the 2018 launch, the title has received a significant technical overhaul that marks a departure from its previous development foundation.
The developers have officially transitioned the game from the Unity engine to their own proprietary technology, dubbed the Waylith Engine. This internal shift aims to enhance the overall gameplay experience through substantial technical improvements.
Performance has been optimized significantly, with the developers reporting that game processes now run between two and four times faster. This improvement extends to map generation and general loading times, ensuring that colonies operate more efficiently than in previous versions.
Mod compatibility remains intact, with tests showing that a setup with 1,500 mods now loads in six minutes, compared to the previous 14-minute wait. While existing save files are preserved, the studio notes that some older hardware may face compatibility issues and encourages users to report such errors via the official Discord channel.
