Developer Auroch Digital enlisted composer Mick Gordon to create music for the climactic boss fight in Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun 2. Gordon, known for his work on the Doom series, sought to provide a "big and bombastic" sound for the sequel's final encounter, which features a scale not present in the original title.
Gordon’s creative process involves analyzing gameplay footage provided by the QA department to determine the ideal tempo for his compositions. By using a metronome to match the natural pace of the action, he aims to maintain "forward momentum." He notes that music set to an incorrect tempo can make a game feel sluggish or overwhelming, potentially leading players to disable the audio.
The development of the track, titled 'Ascent of the Arkifane', was a collaborative effort involving back-and-forth communication with the development team. Gordon emphasizes that he avoids using pre-existing riffs, preferring to build a unique musical identity for each project. He views the player as a collaborator, noting that his music is designed to adapt dynamically to the player's actions during gameplay.
Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun 2 is currently available on PlayStation 5, PC, and Xbox Series X|S, with a Nintendo Switch 2 version planned for a later date. IGN awarded the game an 8 out of 10, describing it as "an explosive sequel that packs a bloody punch."
