Renowned composer Frank Klepacki, known for his work on titles like Eye of the Beholder 2, has pushed back against assertions that the real-time strategy genre is defunct. While acknowledging that the genre has diminished since its 1990s peak, Klepacki maintains that it continues to possess significant life.
In an interview with Edge, Klepacki dismissed past claims that the genre was disappearing. He suggested that while other game types have captured more mainstream attention, the industry operates in cycles. He noted that the continued release of new titles proves the genre is not going away.
Klepacki expressed concern regarding a lack of creative risk-taking within the industry, particularly among major developers. He argued that while indie studios are pursuing unique concepts, the middle ground for triple-A titles has largely vanished, limiting the scope for innovation in the genre.
Despite these challenges, the genre shows signs of activity. Recent developments include new content for Warcraft 3, ongoing support for StarCraft 2, and the existence of titles like Tempest Rising, Company of Heroes, and the Age of Empires series. These examples suggest that traditional real-time strategy games remain active.
