Epic Games has introduced a preview version of its updated PC games launcher, which the company describes as significantly faster and more responsive than its predecessor. A notable addition in this release is official support for Linux, with plans to bring Fortnite to the platform through the new application.
The development of this launcher utilized AI-assisted tools to replicate core functionality from the existing software. VP Martin Keely stated that AI proved helpful for testing and development acceleration, though the team supervised the process and reviewed all code generated by AI agents, distinguishing their workflow from a reported "no more hand-written code" model.
This project aligns with a broader corporate pivot toward AI-accelerated development. CEO Tim Sweeney recently announced a company-wide initiative to retool teams for maximum AI integration, aiming to enable developers to build more and better content. Keely noted that the launcher serves as a demonstration of the efficiency gains Epic expects from this strategic direction.
The preview is available today for Windows, Mac, and Linux users. While the current launcher remains accessible, Epic has not provided a specific timeline for a full transition. A complete rollout will occur once the new version achieves stability and feature parity with the existing application.
