Epic Games Store has unveiled a new launcher version designed to compete with Steam. The company claims this update offers significantly improved responsiveness and speed compared to its current iteration and the rival platform.
Performance benchmarks indicate that cold starting the store takes 5.47 seconds, which is 46% faster than Steam's 10.07 seconds. Additionally, restoring the application from the system tray to the library takes 0.36 seconds, representing a 14% improvement over Steam's 0.42 seconds.
These results were verified through independent testing by Keywords Studios across 13 Windows PCs with varied hardware. Notably, the development process utilized AI-assisted coding, often referred to as vibe coding.
The launcher is currently in a beta phase for data collection and testing purposes. For the first time, the application is also available for Linux users, expanding beyond the previous Windows and macOS limitations.
