Epic Games is undergoing a significant organizational shift, mandating an "AI First" development strategy across its teams. While CEO Tim Sweeney confirmed this transition, reports indicate the policy is being applied to a collaborative shooter project featuring Disney, Marvel, and Star Wars intellectual properties.
Internal directives for the shooter project reportedly include a ban on hand-written code, with leadership instructing staff to utilize generative AI tools like Anthropic's Claude. Furthermore, the project requires that all artistic assets be produced through AI-driven workflows, a mandate that has reportedly caused concern among the development staff.
The shooter project, which was previously scheduled for release in March 2027, has been delayed with no new launch date provided. While reports suggest Epic Games underestimated the necessary resources and time for the project, company communications director Jake Jones stated that the firm is embracing AI to accelerate development under the guidance of its human developers.
CEO Tim Sweeney defended the pivot, asserting that the goal is to empower teams to create more and better content rather than reducing headcount. This transition follows a period of significant layoffs earlier this year, which the company previously stated were unrelated to AI. Sweeney maintains an optimistic outlook, viewing these technological changes as essential for the future of the industry.
