In Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve, developer Project Aces has shifted its narrative approach to deliver an immersive and emotional story within the world of Strangereal. The plot highlights the desperate struggle of the weakened Central Usean Federation Navy against invading forces from Sotoa.
Players assume the role of a silent fighter pilot who is rescued from a life raft by the carrier Endurance. The protagonist initially serves as navigator for Jan “Rex” Cope, a legendary ace known as the Wings of Theve whose persona is largely a propaganda tool. After Cope dies in combat, the player inherits the callsign in secret and becomes central to the war effort.
Story progression largely unfolds through first-person scenes that place players directly inside the narrative alongside other characters, utilizing the DualSense controller's haptic feedback, directional buttons, and analog sticks for subtle interactions and choices.
The narrative places a heavy emphasis on the Joker Squadron, allowing players to build bonds through missions, briefings, and radio communications. Player choices during missions, such as aiding allied troops or squadmates, influence how characters perceive the protagonist and help shape the personal stakes of the conflict.
Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve is scheduled to launch on the PlayStation 5 on October 2.
