Chiptune band Anamanaguchi, formed in 2004, is set to perform a full-band concert in Japan on October 13 at Shibuya duo MUSIC EXCHANGE. This marks their first full-member appearance in the country since the 2011 Blip Festival Tokyo.

The band blends digital chiptune sounds from NES and Game Boy hardware with live rock instrumentation. Peter Berkman, the band's guitarist and programmer, explains that they utilize original game hardware as a practical means to perform their programmed compositions live, favoring the precise, discrete timing of digital systems over traditional keyboards.

Berkman attributes their musical development to a deep respect for Japanese culture, citing influences from Capcom and Nintendo games to artists like Cornelius, Shiina Ringo, and Hi-STANDARD. He notes that Japanese media provided a delicate, nuanced alternative to the aggressive, macho atmosphere often found in American music scenes during his youth.

While the band has achieved global recognition through projects like the Scott Pilgrim soundtrack and collaborations with Hatsune Miku, Berkman expresses a desire to re-establish the band's identity beyond these specific works. He remains optimistic about the upcoming show, despite concerns regarding the weekday scheduling, and hopes to explore Japan further during his brief visit.
