A newly discovered glitch in the 1998 action-adventure game The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is impacting speedrunning communities. Reported by ZFG, the exploit allows players to bypass traditional combat requirements for specific bosses, such as Volvagia and Ganondorf, by manipulating attack attribute data.

The technique involves using a slingshot, an empty bottle containing a bug or fairy, and a spin attack. By using the bottle at the precise moment a boss's hitbox is fading, the game overwrites the attack's attribute. For Ganondorf, this allows players to defeat him without the Light Arrows by overwriting the attack with the Light Arrow property, followed by a specific sequence of sword strikes.

While the glitch is powerful, ZFG and the community note that it is not a universal shortcut. Success depends on memory loading and specific situational preparation. Furthermore, integrating this into existing speedrun categories requires re-evaluating established routes, as current strategies often skip the items now required to perform the glitch, such as the slingshot.

The exploit is confirmed to function on the original NINTENDO 64 version and the NINTENDO 64 Nintendo Classics release. It also appears to work in the sequel, The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask. While its impact on various speedrun categories remains under investigation, it is expected to influence future record attempts.
