Riot Games has announced that League of Legends Classic will go offline in January 2027. The mode, which launched only six months prior, aimed to capture nostalgia by reverting to an older version of the Summoner's Rift map and removing most champions and kits introduced after 2013.
A Riot spokesperson stated that while many players enjoyed revisiting the game's history, the majority have returned to other parts of the League ecosystem. Consequently, the current season will be the final one, though the developer intends to bring the mode back in the future as an event-based experience with potential adjustments.
Esports veteran Alex Chu previously noted that the mode's appeal was limited because players define "classic" differently based on when they started playing. He suggested that for many, the experience felt like an old game rather than a nostalgic return, noting that League of Legends lacks the persistent, low-pressure environment found in classic MMORPGs.
Despite the upcoming closure, Riot plans to release at least seven more champions, including Mordekaiser, Yorick, Hecarim, and Lucian in the 26.21 update. The company confirmed that refunds will be issued for any content rendered obsolete by the mode's removal.
