Cloud Imperium Games has officially launched the Steam store page for Squadron 42, a single-player spin-off of the space MMO Star Citizen. The developer has also released a new trailer titled The Oath, which showcases the game's cinematic scope and features a cast of Hollywood actors, including Mark Hamill, Gary Oldman, and Henry Cavill.
The game is a sci-fi action-adventure where players join the UEE Navy to engage in space combat, FPS battles, and exploration across various galactic locations. Development began in 2014, and after multiple delays, the title is currently scheduled for release in the second quarter of 2027. CEO Chris Roberts noted that the schedule was adjusted to avoid competing with the release of GTA6.
Recent hands-on impressions from a five-hour playtest event in Manchester have surfaced. Participants praised the high-quality character graphics and the sophisticated AI behavior during FPS combat. However, some testers noted that the experience feels more focused on cinematic narrative than player freedom. Reports also mentioned minor technical issues, such as graphical glitches and object display errors.
Squadron 42 is slated for a PC release via Steam, with official support for Japanese interface and subtitles confirmed. Prospective players should be aware that the game requires a separate Roberts Space Industries account to play.
