Ludeon Studios has announced a major update for the colony management simulation game RimWorld. Version 1.7 marks a significant technical shift as the game moves from the Unity engine to Waylith, a proprietary engine developed in-house by the studio.

The transition to the Waylith engine focuses on performance optimization. Internal testing indicates that the game runs 2 to 4 times faster, with specific improvements noted in startup times, map generation, and save loading. For players utilizing extensive mod lists, such as a set of 1,500 mods, loading times have been reduced from 14 minutes to 6 minutes.

Regarding compatibility, Ludeon Studios states that version 1.6 save files are directly compatible with 1.7 and can even be reverted to the previous version. While most existing mods should function without modification, some may display compatibility warnings due to the version change. The new engine also introduces support for modern C# features, potentially simplifying the creation of complex visual effects for modders.

The 1.7 update is currently available via the unstable beta branch on Steam. Beyond this update, the studio confirmed that Waylith is being utilized for an unannounced new project, though details regarding its nature or potential relation to the RimWorld franchise remain undisclosed.
