Riot Games is actively working to resolve technical issues following the transition of Teamfight Tactics (TFT) to the Unreal Engine. Jeff Chiao, the game's executive producer, formally apologized to the player community for the current state of the game, acknowledging that the transition has not met expectations regarding performance and stability.
The transition has caused significant bugs, particularly affecting ranked play, mobile connectivity, and the restoration of legacy assets like Little Legends and arenas. Chiao explained that the complexity of visual effects in these assets led to unexpected bugs, with some items containing up to 15 errors. The development team is currently improving bug-tracking tools and dedicating resources to restore these features.
To address these challenges, Riot has increased development staff, specifically within the game design department. Chiao noted that Set 18 is the first to benefit from this expanded team, showing improvements in balance and deck diversity. Future plans include introducing new features such as special ceremonies for 3-star 5-cost champions and exploring new game modes enabled by the Unreal Engine.
Despite the current growth pains, Riot maintains that the engine transition is a necessary, future-oriented step for the game's long-term evolution. The team remains committed to releasing three sets per year and is actively soliciting player feedback to shape future content, including potential esports-themed cosmetics.
