Final Fantasy VII Revelation director Naoki Hamaguchi has delivered disappointing news for fans hoping for a modern remake of the classic 1998 PlayStation RPG Xenogears. Originally launched by Square (now Square Enix), the title was famously proposed at one point as Final Fantasy VII and is noted for its complex narrative, innovative combat, and philosophical themes, though it notably never released in Europe.
When asked about the possibility of bringing Xenogears to modern platforms following a small nod in Final Fantasy VII, Hamaguchi stated that drawing from his experience with the Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy, executing a similar project for a game from that era would involve complicated work. He indicated that a project of those massive dimensions is unlikely to happen in the short term, comparing it to the standard response Square Enix executives typically give regarding Final Fantasy VI.
Furthermore, Hamaguchi appears to rule out alternative options such as an HD-2D remake—a less ambitious project than the Final Fantasy VII reimagining—or even a basic remaster. The original title's only reeditions include a 2011 release on the PS Store as a classic compatible with PS3, PSP, and PS Vita, alongside various fan tributes and technical demos built in Unreal Engine 5.
