The classic horror story Carrie, originally adapted by Brian De Palma from Stephen King's novel in 1974, is receiving a new version scheduled to premiere on October 7. Director Mike Flanagan explained that the project shifts the setting to the modern era to explore how smartphones and social media can inflict severe societal damage.
Speaking to GamesRadar+, Flanagan noted that this contemporary context heavily impacts the infamous shower menstruation scene. While past adaptations featured classmates merely laughing in the locker room, the new version incorporates the cruelty of recording and sharing videos and photos of the incident. Flanagan structured the sequence around the end of a pilot episode to build up to the moment, highlighting the normalization of modern teenage cruelty and digital harassment.
Summer H. Howell stars as Carrie in the upcoming adaptation. Stephen King praised the project on social media, stating that its commentary on social media is shocking and truthful, while Flanagan expressed deep respect for the resilience required by today's teenagers.
