A group of modders has announced Tales of Symphonia: Definitive Edition, an ambitious project for the Steam version of the classic JRPG. The public beta for this project is scheduled to begin on October 11. The team aimed to combine the best aspects of the various versions released since the game's original debut on GameCube in 2003, while restoring features lost in subsequent ports and modernizing dated elements.
Among the most prominent technical additions is the return of the 60 fps framerate from the original GameCube release, overcoming the 30 fps limit present in later conversions. The developers utilized artificial intelligence tools during reverse engineering to locate code modifications made when the game was previously adapted to 30 fps, although the review, testing, and bug fixing required thousands of hours of human labor. Furthermore, the project restores missing voice lines and texts, improves textures based on the GameCube edition, and restores the original cel-shading look that was altered starting with the PS3 version.
The mod also introduces optional quality-of-life improvements and significant combat updates. These battle enhancements include free movement during fights, additional shortcuts for Arts, the removal of the queue that prevented simultaneous execution of certain high-level spells, and manual activation for Overlimits. Players who prefer a traditional experience can keep these modifications disabled, as they are entirely optional.
