Several high-profile video games have remained in development for over a decade, a phenomenon often described as development hell. While some titles eventually launch, others face repeated delays or internal studio challenges that extend their production cycles significantly.
Ubisoft’s Beyond Good & Evil 2, an open-world space action-adventure, has been in the works for 19 years since starting pre-production in 2007. Despite the cancellation of other projects, Ubisoft confirmed in January 2026 that development continues. Similarly, Rockstar Games’ Grand Theft Auto 6 has spanned a 12-year cycle since its 2014 pre-production, with a current launch scheduled for Nov. 19, 2026.
Other projects face complex hurdles. Cloud Imperium Games’ Squadron 42, announced in 2012, missed its original 2014 release target. Although the developer reported the game as feature complete in December 2025, a 2026 release remains uncertain. Meanwhile, The Wolf Among Us 2, first announced in 2017, has endured studio closures and layoffs. Following a 2026 re-reveal, it is now slated for 2027, which would mark a decade of development.
Cygames’ Project Awakening, revealed in 2018 but announced in 2016, also remains in progress. CEO Koichi Watanabe recently described development as progressing steadily, though no new footage has appeared since 2021. These titles illustrate the varied challenges studios face when managing long-term, ambitious projects.
