Key information

Xbox has established a new business division, XP, dedicated to expanding its blockbuster game franchises through licensing agreements. This initiative aims to generate additional revenue from intellectual properties, following the success of adaptations like the Fallout television series and the Minecraft movie.

The XP division will focus on four primary areas: film and television adaptations, merchandise, live events or attractions, and brand partnerships. According to Xbox chief strategy officer Matthew Ball, the division centralizes existing capabilities to create new ways for audiences to engage with established gaming worlds.

Simultaneously, Maria Angelidou-Smith has been appointed as the new CEO of Mojang. Previously a leader at Meta, her background includes extensive experience in product development and monetization. Xbox boss Asha Sharma stated that the company sought a leader capable of managing community-focused products at a massive scale.

These strategic shifts occur alongside ongoing corporate restructuring, which includes significant workforce reductions. While management emphasizes a focus on partnerships and operating models to ensure future success, critics suggest that earlier investment in licensing could have potentially benefited other studios and titles within the Xbox portfolio.
