Key information
Blizzard is developing World of Warcraft: Forever, a project designed to offer a more deliberate and slower pace compared to the modern retail experience. Associate production director Clay Stone suggests this shift responds to a growing player desire for a reprieve from the constant noise and distractions of daily life.
The development team observed that the success of World of Warcraft Classic and the 2023 Hardcore mode indicated that players were seeking experiences beyond mere nostalgia. These modes attracted both returning veterans and new players who appreciated the slower, more methodical gameplay loop.
Unlike the seasonal structure of retail World of Warcraft, which can feel ephemeral and discourage players from joining late, Forever aims to provide a permanent, horizontal progression experience. This design choice specifically addresses concerns from players who avoided Season of Discovery due to its temporary nature.
While the project encourages a relaxed approach, Stone notes that the team still values players who engage in min-maxing or endgame optimization. The beta version has already seen a mix of playstyles, with developers aiming to ensure that the game remains accessible to new participants regardless of when they begin.
