Star Wars: Galactic Racer introduces a unique run-based career mode developed by Fuse Games, according to an IGN opinion piece by Phil Iwaniuk. Fuse Games co-founder and CEO Matt Webster explained in May that instead of a standard to-do list of championships, players pick event sequences with risks and rewards where losing too many times ends the championship entirely.

Unlike modern racing titles that either focus on PvP sim racing or failure-proof open-world progression like Forza Horizon 6, Galactic Racer implements real consequences for crashes and losses. Webster noted that racing games have lost consequence over time, prompting the team to borrow hybrid mechanics from contemporary gaming genres.

The run structure turns planetary status effects into roguelite variables that inspire specific vehicle builds. Players can turn negative conditions, such as Jakku's overheating or Ando Prime's freezing plains, to their advantage using RNG-ified upgrade cards and pre-race check tokens from backers.

Alongside Galactic Racer, other roguelite motorsport games like Carmageddon: Rogue Shift and Driving Rogue launched this year. Creative director Kieran Crimmins emphasized that the choices players make in this structure can lead to ultimate demise or victory.
