Key information
Ubisoft is reportedly preparing to relaunch Watch Dogs: Legion with a revamped Director's Cut edition early next year. Insider Gaming reported the upcoming push, which IGN has also corroborated through its own sources.
Originally released in 2020 to a tepid reaction, the game divided fans by replacing a single protagonist with the ability to recruit and play as any non-player character in post-Brexit London. Subsequent post-launch expansions introduced recognizable series characters such as Aiden Pearce and Wrench, alongside a non-canonical Assassin's Creed crossover expansion.
It is anticipated that the Director's Cut could package this previously released content together from the start, potentially shifting focus toward more recognizable faces rather than the recruit-anyone mechanic. Meanwhile, creative director Clint Hocking departed Ubisoft earlier this year after comparing leading a large team to navigating falling barrels in Donkey Kong.
Although Ubisoft chief Yves Guillemot did not highlight Watch Dogs among major franchises following recent company restructuring, he affirmed it remains an important brand for the future. Additionally, the status of the long-planned Watch Dogs film project remains unclear, having wrapped production two years ago with subsequent reshoots still lacking a release date.
