Cloud Imperium Games has unveiled a new cinematic trailer for Squadron 42, the story-driven single-player spinoff of the space simulation game Star Citizen. The developer also confirmed the game is now available for Steam wishlists and revealed its full Hollywood cast.
The title, led by Wing Commander creator Chris Roberts, features a narrative-heavy experience that integrates space combat with first-person shooter mechanics. Players can expect ship customization, hacking mini-games, and puzzle-solving elements, with performances from actors like Mark Hamill and Henry Cavill woven directly into the gameplay.
Development of the project has spanned 12 years, beginning in 2014. While the team initially planned a 2026 release, Chris Roberts announced a delay to Q2 2027. This decision was made to avoid competing for media attention with the launch of GTA 6, which Roberts described as an attention buzz saw.
The project remains controversial, with Star Citizen having raised over $1 billion since its crowdfunding began 14 years ago. While some critics label the project a scam due to its high-priced virtual ships, supporters maintain it is a compelling space simulator. Star Citizen itself currently lacks a release window.
