Key information

Cloud Imperium Games has unveiled a new cinematic trailer for Squadron 42, the story-driven single-player spinoff of the space simulator Star Citizen. Led by Wing Commander creator Chris Roberts, the project has been in development for 12 years and features a star-studded cast including Mark Hamill, Gary Oldman, Gillian Anderson, Ben Mendelsohn, and Henry Cavill.

The gameplay integrates space combat, first-person shooter mechanics, and a narrative driven by full performance capture. Players can engage in ship customization, puzzle solving, platforming, and hacking mini-games. The title features Ian Duncan and Alix Wilton Regan as the male and female player characters, with performances integrated directly into the gameplay rather than being limited to cinematics.

Following a delay announced in August, the game is now scheduled for release in Q2 2027. Chris Roberts explained that launching in 2026 would place the title in the shadow of GTA 6, potentially limiting media coverage. This decision follows a period of controversy for the developer, including a problematic livestream and ongoing criticism regarding the project's long-term crowdfunding model.

While Star Citizen has raised over $1 billion, it remains without a confirmed release window. Squadron 42 is now available for wishlisting on Steam as the studio continues to navigate its complex development history.
