Key information

Sony is reportedly scaling back its involvement in the virtual reality market, as evidenced by the recent sale of over 400 VR and MR patents to Meta. Industry observers suggest this move indicates a potential withdrawal from developing proprietary VR hardware.

According to ZDNet Korea, the transaction includes 419 global patents, with 180 originating from the United States and over 230 from Japan, Europe, China, and South Korea. Notably, 43 U.S. patents were transferred between June and September of this year.

Market trends have shifted away from immersive headsets following challenges faced by Apple's Vision Pro and the discontinuation of Microsoft's HoloLens. Conversely, Meta has seen success with its lightweight Ray-Ban Meta AI glasses, which prioritize non-intrusive assistance over total immersion.

Sony, a pioneer in head-mounted displays since the 2011 HMZ-T1, appears to be pivoting its strategy. Given the lukewarm reception of its PlayStation VR hardware and these patent sales, the company may transition into a supplier of high-value components like Micro-OLED screens and specialized sensors.
