Key information
Developer Jagex has officially announced a brand new massively multiplayer online follow-up carrying the working title RuneScape 4 during its annual RuneFest convention.
The upcoming project utilizes the Unreal Engine and originates from an intended expansion for the survival game Dragonwilds. Playtesters repeatedly requested a traditional MMO approach regarding the aesthetic and setting, prompting developers to scale the project into an entirely separate game.
According to MMORPG.com reporting, the initial expansion concept was previously slated for a 2027 release, though expanding the scope into a standalone sequel has likely delayed that timeframe. Further technological specifics concerning the game engine remain unconfirmed.
The teaser trailer displayed a medieval town featuring floating islands, an adventurer flying on a dragon attacked by a three-headed creature, and a wizard addressing a newcomer. The visual direction merges elements from RuneScape 3 and Old School RuneScape, building directly upon the art style established in Dragonwilds.
