Key information
Sony has introduced Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR), an AI-based upscaling technology brought to the standard PlayStation 5. Unlike PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution), which was previously exclusive to the PS5 Pro, QSSR was announced as a lighter version of PSSR specifically tailored for the standard PS5 GPU.
Developed through Project Amethyst in collaboration between Sony and AMD, the feature utilizes a more efficient neural network architecture to run on the console's more limited specifications. While it is not as accurate as PSSR on the PS5 Pro, QSSR offers improvements over conventional upscaling by delivering more detailed images, particularly on small objects like distant building textures or blades of grass, and reducing visual breakup.
At launch, QSSR supports only two games: Marvel's Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei. Studios Insomniac and Sucker Punch praised the technology for increasing pixel clarity and visual stability.
Sony plans to offer QSSR widely to all PlayStation-affiliated studios, expecting more game adoptions soon. The upscaling feature is completely optional, allowing players to enable or disable it at will.
