Key information
Sony has announced Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR), a new tier of AI-powered upscaling developed through Project Amethyst in collaboration with AMD. While PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) remains the gold standard on the PS5 Pro due to high computational requirements, QSSR brings the benefits of AI upscaling to the base PS5 model. The technology relies on a leaner neural network architecture and a hand-tuned implementation designed to maximize performance on the PS5 hardware.
Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei are the first titles to utilize the new QSSR library, with a patch available starting today that introduces QSSR as an additional graphics option on the PS5. Mike Fitzgerald from Insomniac Games noted that the technology enhances clarity and pixel-level stability in locations such as the streets of Madripoor and the alleys of Shinjuku. Jasmin Patry from Sucker Punch Productions stated that QSSR brings fine details and temporal stability to Ghost of Yōtei that were previously not possible on the standard console.
QSSR will be made broadly available to all PlayStation developers, with plans for the technology to appear in many more upcoming titles.
