Key information

Seventeen years after its original Nintendo Wii release, Vanillaware is bringing the 2D action game Muramasa: Revenant Blades to PC. This title features a narrative centered on a cooperative relationship between the protagonists and the legendary swordsmith Muramasa, who crafts powerful blades in exchange for collected souls.

The update introduces a revamped skill system for the game's 108 swords. Players can now equip three ground and three air abilities independently, allowing for complex combat combinations that were previously impossible. Director Wataru Nakanishi notes that this change encourages players to utilize a wider variety of blades rather than relying solely on late-game weapons.

Combat difficulty has been adjusted, with enemies now featuring fixed levels rather than scaling with the player. Players must manage their sword durability to avoid weapon breakage during intense encounters. The game includes multiple playable characters, each with unique stories, originally introduced in a 2013 Vita re-release.

To prepare the title for modern displays, artists manually touched up and recreated assets to achieve high-definition visuals. While there are currently no specific plans for further Vanillaware ports to PC, the studio hopes the success of this release might lead to future opportunities.
