Wizards of the Coast has announced its third Marvel collaboration for Magic: The Gathering, titled Darkhold Destiny. Unlike previous crossovers, this set features an original narrative where Dormammu and Hela utilize the Darkhold to invade the multiverse, requiring intervention from heroes like Doctor Strange and Thor.
The set emphasizes spellcasting, categorized into Arcane, Divine, and Dark magic schools. Wizards of the Coast is reintroducing the Arcane subtype for instants and sorceries, a mechanic absent since 2005, though the Splice Onto Arcane ability will not return.
Artistic direction for Darkhold Destiny grants creators more freedom to integrate Marvel characters into the Magic aesthetic. For example, Scarlet Witch is depicted with a distinct style that aligns more closely with Magic's visual identity while maintaining her iconic mask.
Product offerings include Booster Packs, Collector Boosters, Bundles, and four Commander decks, such as Strange Academy and Gods of Asgard. Additionally, the release includes two scene boxes and mechanically unique promo cards. The story begins in February with an Image Comics collaboration, followed by a second comic preceding the April 2027 launch.
