Key information
NEW OLD PIXELS has entered into a licensing agreement with Microids to bring the 1989 arcade title Toki, known in Japan as JuJu Densetsu, to new platforms. The original game follows the protagonist JuJu, who is transformed into an ape and must rescue his lover Miho from the demon king Vookimedlo.
Unlike previous efforts, this project focuses on porting the original version to hardware that did not receive releases during the game's initial run. Founder Benjamin Yoris stated that these ports represent the core purpose of the company's establishment.
The developer is currently evaluating classic platforms equipped with Motorola 68000 or Zilog Z80 processors. NEW OLD PIXELS views technical constraints as creative tools, believing that memory and processing limitations foster unique visuals and skill-based gameplay. The company intends to release these versions on physical media, such as cartridges or circuit boards.
While the specific target hardware remains undecided, this initiative marks a distinct approach to retro game preservation. It follows recent industry trends, such as the NEOGEO port of Zero Wing, which was showcased at Tokyo Game Show 2026.
