Key information
Rockstar North Head of Development Rob Nelson discussed the long development process and core mechanics of Grand Theft Auto 6 during an interview with IGN. Nelson explained that the team focused heavily on player choice, seamless open-world freedom, and deeply interactive environments for protagonists Jason and Lucia. According to Nelson, the title builds upon systems from Red Dead Redemption 2 while introducing advanced mechanics tailored for current-generation console hardware.
The game features an intricate wanted and heat system where law enforcement responds to specific reported crimes and retains details regarding a player's appearance or clothing. Nelson highlighted that NPCs possess varied body types and heights due to dynamic animation retargeting, and they can react to players eavesdropping or lingering too close. Furthermore, vehicle theft has been stratified with dedicated tools like key cloners and specialized scanners to evaluate vehicle status and locks.
Players can manage a separate Criminal Profile and nurture a relationship between Jason and Lucia through shared open-world activities or robberies. Nelson noted that while narrative missions require specific beats, the studio aimed to blend open-world emergent encounters directly with the story experience.
