Key information

Google and Unity have announced new generative AI platforms designed to facilitate game creation through text prompts. Google's tool, Playground, is currently available for testing in the US. Unity's platform, Unity Spark, is scheduled for release soon. These systems are intended to lower barriers for those without technical expertise in complex game engines.

The platforms utilize a tiered approach. Google Playground functions as an entry-level tool for generating simple games from text descriptions. Unity Spark is described as a more complex system that integrates with Unity's traditional engine. Unity CEO Matt Bromberg clarified that Spark is not intended for "one-shotting" development, but rather serves as a helper within the professional workflow.

Unity Spark features real-time collaborative creation. A demonstration showed users building a sci-fi shooter titled Space Corridor, which utilized assets from the Unity Store. The platform's output has faced criticism from developers like Dan Marshall, who questioned the value of such AI-generated projects. Additionally, Unity has not yet established an estimated carbon footprint for the power-intensive generation process.

These announcements follow similar industry trends. Epic Games has integrated large language model support into Unreal Engine, with plans for deeper integration in future versions. Capcom is also updating its proprietary RE Engine to incorporate AI assistance for tasks such as coding and quality assurance testing.
