Key information

Jagex has officially announced a fourth MMO in the RuneScape series, revealed over the weekend at RuneFest in Birmingham. The working title for the new project is RS4, though the studio has not yet committed to calling it RuneScape 4 or finalized an official name.

The upcoming MMO is built in Unreal Engine and will bring the world of Gielinor to life, specifically set in the Sixth Age beginning in the Ashenfall region. The story picks up years after the events of the spin-off RuneScape: Dragonwilds and the defeat of the Dragon Queen Kuldra, with future plans to expand far beyond Ashenfall.

Currently in early development, RS4 is at least a few years away from release. Jagex stated that the new game is not intended to replace existing titles like Old School RuneScape or RuneScape: Dragonwilds, which will each maintain their own separate teams and ongoing investment.

Alongside the new game announcement, Jagex revealed an upcoming RuneScape animated adaptation being produced in partnership with Los Angeles production company Lyrical Media and YouTuber Charlie "MoistCr1TiKaL" White.
