Key information
Behold Studios, the Brazilian developer known for Knights of Pen & Paper and Chroma Squad, released its latest title, Deep Dish Dungeon, on October 13. The game is available on Xbox Series X|S, PC, and is included in the Xbox Game Pass Ultimate library from its launch day.
Director Saulo Camarotti describes the game as a dungeon crawler with survival and Metroidvania elements. Unlike traditional combat-focused titles, the game emphasizes exploration and survival. Players navigate a fixed, interconnected dungeon rather than a procedurally generated one, unlocking new areas by acquiring tools and abilities, such as hammers or grappling hooks, in a style reminiscent of Metroidvania progression.
A core mechanic involves cooking, where players prepare meals using ingredients like cassava or guarana to gain specific advantages, such as increased health or speed. The studio incorporated Brazilian cultural elements into these recipes, including dishes like coxinha and cornmeal cake. Camarotti notes that while the setting is fictional, the team internally envisions the dungeon located in the Amazon.
Developed by a two-person team over two years, the game supports solo play or online multiplayer for up to three players. It features cross-play between Steam and Xbox consoles, as well as Xbox Play Anywhere functionality. Camarotti expressed that being featured on Game Pass is a privilege for the studio, providing essential visibility and helping to foster a multiplayer community.
