Key information

Capcom has announced its intentions to gradually transform its proprietary RE Engine into an AI-generation game engine. The disclosure was made by programmer Satoshi Ishida during the Capcom Open Conference RE: 2026 tech conference held yesterday. Ishida revealed that the ongoing initiative is called Project REX.

Project REX comprises six distinct programs designed to integrate artificial intelligence and machine-learning into the RE Engine. Specific development tools include Re:Dox for data handling and translation into common rules, and RE:UI for AI-assisted optimisation of engine development tools.

Additional programs aim to accelerate development processes. RE: Runtime enables the engine to animate groups of numerous objects and characters simultaneously, whereas RE: Flows simplifies implementing game mechanic ideas and converting them into standardized programming languages.

Capcom stated the transformation addresses massive modern game complexity, data management challenges, and the needs of over 2,000 international engine users. This aligns with Capcom's stance to boost pipeline efficiency while avoiding AI-generated assets in finished games.
