Key information

Resident Evil and Street Fighter developer Capcom revealed significant changes coming to its RE Engine, announcing plans to incrementally improve and transform it into an AI generation game engine. On October 2, the company held a tech conference called Capcom Open Conference RE: 2026, featuring a presentation by programmer Satoshi Ishida outlining a multi-step improvement project named REX.

According to a report by GameBiz, the REX project addresses development challenges including massive game scales, larger staff sizes requiring accessible tools, and the necessity of integrating artificial intelligence to streamline workflows. REX unifies the engine under a common programming language to make it easier for both humans and AI to utilize.

Capcom stated at a March 2026 shareholders meeting that it will not implement AI-generated assets into its games. Instead, the company plans to use artificial intelligence as a contributing technology to improve efficiency in graphics, sound, and programming.

The long-term goal of the REX program is to evolve the RE Engine for the next generation by gradually adding improvements rather than building a new engine from scratch. Capcom also makes some improvements open-source to train AI as part of its objective to create games alongside artificial intelligence.
