Key information
Atari is reviving its classic 800XL personal computer, a machine that first appeared 43 years ago. This project is a collaboration with publisher and developer Plaion, aiming to provide a faithful recreation of the original all-in-one 8-bit system.
The device retains a functional mechanical keyboard, allowing users to engage in coding via Atari BASIC alongside gaming. It includes a cartridge slot compatible with most original Atari 400, 800, XL, and XE software, while also supporting digital files loaded through flash drives.
Modern hardware updates include an HDMI output and four USB-A ports for peripherals. The package features a redesigned joystick with eight action and function buttons, plus 25 pre-installed games such as Asteroids, Centipede, and Missile Command.
The 800XL is currently available for preorder at a price of $219.99. According to the announcement, shipping for the units is scheduled to commence in April 2027.
